Tragedy befell residents of Kitebi, Mutundwe Lubaga in Kampala after a building collapsed at night killing people.
According to eyewitnesses, a 5 storied commercial building owned by Hajji Obed Kiwanuka was still under construction collapsed at midnight on Monday, while several of the builders taking shelter in lower floors were preparing to sleep.
Rescue operations by Uganda police and local authorities have so far retrieved a dead body out of the debris as excavators continue to search for the remaining . The body of the deceased identified as Kelvin Nyanzi was taken to Mulago Hospital for postmortem.
Residents affirmed that by the time it collapsed, four or five people were in the building. Three mobile phones believed to belong to the victims had so far been recovered.
Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire could not comment on the matter and asked us to call back after an hour.
Residents attributed the collapse of the building to substandard building materials and blame Kampala Capital City Authority for poor supervision of structures under construction.
