In conformity with the Presidential Elections Act 2005, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) on Friday submitted lists of signatures of registered voters to the Independent Electoral Commision supporting the nomination of Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as the Party Presidential Flag bearer 2020/2021.

The NRM Deputy Secretary General, Hon Richard Todwong and the Deputy National Treasurer Hon Jacquline Kyatuheire presented the files containing signatures to the Acting EC Secretary, Mr. Leonard Mulekwa who received them on behalf of the Commission.

Hon. Todwong said the Party had collected over five million signatures from registered voters across the 142 districts of Uganda and they were submitting early enough to enable the Commission carry out the verification exercise on time.

The Presidential Elections Act compels presidential aspirants to present to the EC signatures indicating the support of not less than one hundred (100) registered voters in each of at least two thirds (2/3) of all the districts of Uganda. With 146 districts, aspirants are required to collect signatures from at least 97 districts.

Speaking on behalf of the Electoral Commission, Mulekwa commended NRM for honoring the National Road map.

“We opened up the process of receiving signatures yesterday and NRM is the first to respond” He said before adding that a certificate would be issued on completion of the verification exercise.

The Deputy National Treasurer, Hon Jacquline Kyatuheire commended the Party members across the country for their overwhelming response towards this exercise but also apologized to the rest of the members who the Secretariat couldn’t reach but wanted to be part of the exercise.

Yoweri Museveni who has been in power for the last 35 years will be officially presented to EC for nomination by the NRM party leadership on November 2 at 10am.
