The spokesperson of Uganda Prisons service Mr. Frank Baine has warned that security agents deployed to enforce lockdown measures will not hesitate to arrest offenders because, there is enough space available in prisons.
Frank Baine said the planned release of prisoners in the face of coronavirus, should not be misinterpreted to mean that government lacks space to take in new offenders. He said prison space is available for those found flaunting the set guidelines.
He made the remarks today during the inter-security task force (JTF) press conference at Uganda Media Center. The JTF noted that there has been disregard of guidelines and orders, which could undermine efforts by government to fight coronavirus.
The security JTF is charged with implementation of guidelines rolled out by the Ministry of Heath in combating the spread of coronavirus in Uganda including stay-home directives, social distancing and night curfew.
Security task-force Spokesperson Brig. Richard Karemire said some elements within the public seem not to understand the gravity of the coronavirus pandemic, but security will not relent in ensuring compliance.
“We have a package of measures, and the box is not yet full. All those who are flaunting the guidelines, will be decisively dealt with. This is not time for jokes” Karemire said.
Police spokesperson CP Fred Enanga said 47 people were arrested in a several operations conducted across the country. 26 of them were found drinking local brew known as Malwa in Nagulu, while 26 were arrested in Bushenyi District.
Police also arrested 3 phone snatchers in areas of Muyenga and Kibuli in Kampala, while several vehicles were impounded for lack of movement permits.
