Coronavirus: Africa cannot be a testing ground for any vaccine -WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) Director General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has admonished the idea of testing the coronavirus vaccine on Africans, saying WHO cannot allow such a thing to happen.

This followed a suggestion by 2 French scientists to have the COVID-19 vaccine trial tested in Africa.

The scientists’ remarks during a TV debate sparked outrage, and they were accused of treating Africans like “human guinea pigs”.

He said the racist remarks cannot be tolerated at a time when the world needs solidarity. Dr. Tedros said the hangover from colonial mentality must stop.

“Africa cannot, and will not be a testing ground for any vaccine.” Dr. Tedros said.

Dr. Tedros said whether the tests will be conducted in Europe, Africa or anywhere, the usual protocol and rules will be followed.

“It is a disgrace and we condemn this in the strongest terms. I assure you that this will not happen in Africa or anywhere” he remarked.
