Masaka DP leaders clash over party register, threaten to impeach Mukasa Mbidde

Chaos has ensued in Democratic Party (DP) leadership in Masaka following claims that some powerful individuals are moving to manipulate the party resister with a motive to rig out potential competitors in the forthcoming elections of party structures.

The fracas followed a meeting held at Agrippa Hotel in Masaka where DP delegate for Greater Masaka Dick Lukyamuzi handed over party registers as membership registration kicked off to facilitate participation in elections for party structures.

However, reports emerged that the register included non-members of DP with Masaka DP Chairman Boney Kasijjagirwa accusing DP Vice President Fred Mukasa Mbidde of conniving to manipulate the register with an intention to rig the elections. On hearing this, chaos ensued in the meeting with party supporters threatening to burn the offices.

Dick Lukyamuzi said the register was approved by NEC but a section of supporters called for the cancellation of the old register, and fresh registration of members claiming it has been doctored.

The leaders and supporters threatened to kick off a process to impeach Mbidde if their demands are not addressed. Led by Masaka DP Chairman Boney Kasijjagirwa, members want NEC to suspend the old registers and failure to do that, an impeachment process starts.

In response, Mbidde said the due process as prescribed by the party constitution will be followed during the registration and elections.

In the same meeting, Lukyamuzi has suspended the DP council secretary Mr. Kasirye for abuse of office. However, Kasirye trashed the decision saying they have no powers to suspend him.
