The government of Uganda has gazzetted the dress code of the UPDF.

According to details in the Uganda Gazette of 18th September 2019, the UPDF head gears come in Army green, Maroon, Red, Black, and Navy Blue, Ceremonial Forage cap, Baseball cap (woodland) and Baseball cap (desert).

On his twitter handle, the UPDF spokesperson Brig. Richard Karemire noted that the action of government was endorsed by the top organs of the army which also recommended the dress committee for concluding the task assigned to it years back.

Karemire says the development is a milestone in the long history of the UPDF, and it manifests the commitment to define the identity and outlook of a professional army as well as adhering to the EAC protocols.

This new development means that anyone found wearing berets in these colors commits an offence.

Red berets have of late been associated with supporters of People Power a political pressure group led by Kyadondo East MP Robert Sentamu Kyagulanyi also known as Bobi Wine.

In the gazette, government issues a notice to the public that unless granted authority by a competent Military Authority, it is prohibited to sell, offer or expose for sale, wear or use, possess or deal in marks, accessories, insignia, decorations and uniforms of UPDF specified in the schedule, and anyone found doing so shall be prosecuted under the UPDF Act 2005.
