KAMPALA, UGANDA: 23 July 2026— Kampala International University (KIU) has reinforced its growing global profile after staff and students participated in the prestigious Erasmus+ Exchange Programme at Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMÜ) in Türkiye. The initiative is expected to deepen international academic partnerships while enhancing the university’s global competitiveness and visibility.
The exchange programme, a flagship higher education initiative of the European Union, brings together European and partner universities to promote academic mobility, research collaboration, innovation, curriculum development, and institutional capacity building.
For KIU, the engagement is a strategic investment in internationalisation—a key pillar recognized by global university ranking systems assessing institutional visibility, research impact, digital presence, and international collaboration.
The development comes as KIU continues its steady rise on the global higher education stage. According to the July 2026 Webometrics Ranking of Universities, KIU remains Uganda’s leading private university, ranks second overall nationally, and places among Africa’s Top 50 universities. These positions reflect the institution’s sustained investment in research, innovation, and digital excellence.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Muhammed Ngoma, who is participating in the programme, described the exchange as an invaluable opportunity that is already fostering lasting academic connections.
“It is a very fulfilling experience, full of networking, benchmarking, experience sharing and lots of lessons as far as higher education is concerned,” Prof. Ngoma said.
He noted that the initiative provides an exceptional platform for institutions to learn from one another while identifying new pathways for collaborative teaching, research, and development.
“Internationalisation is no longer optional for universities that aspire to global relevance. Through Erasmus+, KIU is strengthening partnerships, sharing knowledge, expanding research networks and exposing our staff and students to the best international practices. These collaborations improve academic quality while increasing the University’s global visibility and reputation,” Prof. Ngoma added.
As the EU’s flagship initiative for education, training, youth, and sport, Erasmus+ focuses on funding collaborative institutional projects rather than individual applicants. Participatory benefits include student exchanges, faculty teaching assignments, professional training, joint degree programmes, and joint research ventures.
A key component—Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE)—has proven particularly impactful for African universities by strengthening academic curricula, governance systems, digital learning environments, entrepreneurship, and research infrastructure.
For KIU, participation directly supports its long-term vision to produce globally competitive graduates, expand research networks, and increase academic mobility. Beyond the immediate exchange, the partnership with Ondokuz Mayıs University is set to generate long-term value through joint academic initiatives, staff development, and elevated institutional visibility.
