KAMPALA, Uganda: 23 JUNE 2026— Police Officers on Patrol early Tuesday morning foiled an armed robbery in Nakawa Division, shooting dead one suspect after catching a trio of gunmen in the act of robbing a local businessman and his wife.
The incident occurred at around 12:50 AM along Mukasa Road in Ssemwogerere Zone, according to an official statement released by the Uganda Police Force on June 23, 2026.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the businessman and his wife were walking home when they were ambushed by three armed men. The robbers ordered the couple to stop and lie down on the ground. Fearing for their lives, the victims complied.
The criminals had already robbed the businessman of his wallet and mobile phone at gunpoint and were in the middle of demanding his wife’s phone when local security forces intervened. Police officers executing routine motorcycle patrols in the neighborhood arrived at the exact scene of the crime.
Seeing the approaching patrol, the suspects panicked and fled into the night. In their haste to escape, they abandoned a bag containing a rifle and other items believed to be stolen property.
Patrol officers immediately gave chase. During the ensuing pursuit and operation, police shot and killed one unidentified male suspect, estimated to be about 25 years old.
The police have recovered the abandoned rifle and the bag of suspected stolen goods as investigations continue. Security forces are currently hunting for the two remaining suspects who managed to escape into the dark.
