The Commander of the Mountain Division and Operation Shujaa, Major General Dick Olum, has reaffirmed the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces’ commitment to bringing lasting peace and stability to the people of Kamwenge District.

Maj. Gen. Olum made the commitment during a security assessment tour of the district, where he expressed gratitude to residents for their support of the UPDF and other security agencies in the wake of the Allied Democratic Forces terrorists’ infiltration of the area late last year.

During the tour, Maj. Gen. Olum interacted with residents in Kahunge Town Council, Nyabitiusi, Kitewulizi, Kyabandalara, and Nkongoro, appreciating them for allowing their children to join Local Defence Unit (LDU) structures, but also explained their functions.

The re-engagement of LDUs to boost security in the area followed renewed attacks by ADF that left at least 13 people dead. He said the support from residents has been evident since 1997, and most recently when a few terrorists infiltrated and killed people.

The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Kamwenge, Mr. Isiah Kanyamahane, accompanied Maj. Gen. Olum and thanked the people of Kamwenge for their support of the government and security agencies during the fight against ADF.

Other officials on the tour included Lt Col Mutabazi, District Police Commander Mr. Mugira, OC Prisons ASP Barya, and LCV Chairperson for Kamwenge Mr. Karungi.
