NEMA serves restoration orders to wetland abusers in Wakiso District

The National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) over the weekend served eviction and environmental restoration orders to people that have continued to abuse Lumpewo, Kaliddubi and Nambigirwa wetlands, all in Wakiso District.

Section 130 of NEMA Act, No.5 of 2019 provides for service of Environmental Restoration Orders to persons whose activities are harmful to human health or the environment. The affected areas are majorly wetlands degraded by people who had already erected buildings and turned them into settlements.

The people who received the orders are required to restore the environment or clean-up for the pollution caused.

According to the NEMA Act, recipients of the orders have only 21 days from date of receipt to restore the degraded wetland sections.

In a message posted on his social media pages, the Executive Director for NEMA Dr. Akankwasa Barirega says the environmental protection body will proceed to carryout restoration activities of the degraded wetlands where people have not complied yet they received the restoration orders.
