Foreign Ministry speaks out on plight of Ugandan nationals, victims of earthquake in Turkey

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that one Ugandan national was discovered dead among thousands of people who died after a devastating earthquake hit Turkey last week near the border with Syria.

In a status report issued of 13th February 2023, the foreign affairs ministry Ms Babirye Florence was discovered dead in Hatay province one of the areas badly affected by the earthquake.

A massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked Turkey and Syria on Monday last week and the number of dead is staggering. By Sunday evening, the death toll in the Turkey-Syria earthquakes had passed 23,000.

The ministry also stated that another Ugandan who sustained injuries during the catastrophe is still in hospital in the city of Malatya and continues to respond well.

“The family of the deceased has been contacted and duly informed” the status update reads in part.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a total of Sixteen (16) Ugandan nationals residing in Hatay and Malatya province have been identifies and contacted.
