2 more suspected members of UNCC rebels charged

The Directorate of Crime Intelligence on the 19.09.2022, charged two more suspects of the self-styled rebel group that carried out attacks on police and UPDF personnel at Wakiso, Busunju in Mityana and Nakasozi in Kiboga.

According to Uganda Police spokesperson Fred Enanga, the accused Kisseka Benon alias Andrew alias Hussein, and Kibirango Kassim alias Muwanga alias Dog, belong to a new rebel group the Uganda National Coalition for Change (UNCC) responsible for attacks in which four police officers were killed, 2 UPDF officers injured and 5 guns robbed. However, all the 5 guns were eventually at the Court Martial in Makindye.

It is alleged that both Kisseka and Kibirango participated in the establishment of the rebel camps in Wabunyira, Kikandwa and Kabosi villages. In addition, Kibirango Kassim is said to have participated in the attack of Nakasozi police post in Kiboga, where they killed Cpl Nsubuga Francis and SPC Ddimba Paul and robbed their guns.

On the other hand, Kisseka Benon, was actively involved in the distribution of funds from external sources and facilitation of the UNCC rebel network in the country.

The two, according to Enanga, were tracked down and arrested from Naminya village, Naluwerere, Wakisi sub-county in Buikwe District and Namutamba village, Kagerekamu parish, Ssekanyonyi sub-county in Mityana District respectively.

The two were charged with 10 counts as follows; Treachery (1), Aggravated Robbery (3), Murder (4) and unlawful possession of firearms (2).

This now brings the total number of persons accused of links to the new rebel group to 21.
