The Parliament of Uganda has recognized former Leader of the Opposition, Hon Winnie Kiiza, for her exceptional contribution to democracy and good governance while she served in that position.
Hon Kiiza today received her service award from the Deputy Clerk, Corporate Affairs, Henry Waiswa who handed her a plaque on behalf of the institution of parliament.
Waiswa said that the award was a token of appreciation from Parliament towards Kiiza for exceptional service.
The first female to assume the position, Hon Kiiza served as LOP from May 2016 to August 2018, and her leadership is highly credited as one of the best in the history of parliament. During that time, she was also the Woman MP for Kasese District a constituency she represented for 15 years.
In her remarks, Hon Kiiza commended Parliament for being instrumental in promoting good governance by providing for the Office of the Leader of Opposition and supporting its activities.
‘I am humbled that the works and activities of those in the Opposition can be recognized’ She said.
She added that all efforts dedicated towards offering a platform to the Opposition was a sign of a growing democracy in the country.
Kiiza appreciated the Clerk to Parliament and all staff for all their dedication towards her while she served as the Leader of the Opposition.
“I enjoyed working with everyone and I continue to cherish the moments I had while I served the institution and the country at large,” she added.

Kiiza was born on November 26, 1972 to Modesty Muke and Kanyere Constance Muke.
Her father died when she was 10 years old.
She went to Nsenyi primary school, Kajwenge primary school and Kisinga primary school, Saadi Memorial Secondary School for O’level, and Saint Maria Goretti School for HSC. She later joined National College of Business Studies [present day MUBS].
Kiiza taught at her alma mater, Kisinga primary school and at Saint Maria Goretti School, before working as a tour guide in Queen Elizabeth national park.
Winnie came to Parliament in 2006 on a Forum for Democratic Change [FDC] ticket. Before, she represented the sub-counties of Kiyondo and Kisinga in the District Council of 1998 to 2005 and during that period she also served as the secretary for finance and administration in Kasese District Local Government, and [later] as secretary for social services.
When she was Opposition Chief Whip [2012 to 2014], her husband Bihande was representing Bukonzo East in the ninth Parliament.
