National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) Managing Director, Eng Dr. Silver Mugisha, has attributed the delays in completion of the Katosi water project to logistical supply, leaving residents in Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso people in a water crisis.
Dr Mugisha says, with the logistical supply of required pipes, the project is now expected to be complete in mid-May this year. He adds that, the project contractor, SOGEA-SATOM limited, has also been able to connect the remaining gap of 1.5km between Katosi treatment plant and Nsumba reservoir in Ntenjeru sub-county.
The Katosi water system which is expected to be commissioned soon, will produce 24 million liters daily, and is intended to solve the challenge of water scarcity in the districts of Kampala Metropolitan area. Mugisha was on Friday giving an update on progress of the project.
Mugisha says whereas significant progress has been made and over 95 percent of the project is complete, they had a logistical challenge in the last few weeks. He however noted that the required pipes have started coming and so far 1km of the pipeline has been laid, remaining with 500m to complete.
He added that one of the critical phase at the site which was to lay pipes into the lake was successfully completed, and assured the customers in Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso that soon the project will be concluded.
He says, the contractor has now started testing Katosi treatment plant, after which testing will be done to the pipeline from Katosi to Nsumba, Sonde and later to Naguru.
