Supreme Court of China appoints retired CJ Bart Katureebe

The Supreme Court of China has hired retired Chief Justice Bart Magunda Katureebe as a member of its expert Committee on adjudication of international commercial disputes.

According to the appointment letter this website saw, Justice Katureebe who went into retirement this year after clocking the mandatory age of 70, has been hired on a 4 year term running from December 8, 2020 to December 8, 2024 retired on June 20.

“This is to certify that Bart Magunda Katureebe is appointed as a member of International Commercial Expert Committee of the Supreme People’s Court of the People’s Republic of China for a four-year term from December 8, 2020 to December 8, 2024,” the appointment letter reads in part.

The expert Committee was established in August 2018 in order to ensure fair and effective operation of the China International Commercial Court (CICC), an organ of Supreme People’s Court established to adjudicate international commercial disputes.

It’s core functions include mediating international commercial disputes upon parties designation, providing expert opinion on applicable foreign laws and international conventions, among others.

The expert committee is comprised of leaders of eminent scholars, experienced judges, outstanding law dons who are selected from different countries and legal systems.

In retirement, Katureebe now joins former Chief Justice Benjamin Odoki who was also appointed to form a bench of the Supreme Court in Botswana following his retirement at the age of 70 on 23 March 23, 2013.
