Makerere University administration has announced the institution will be resuming studies next week on 5th October 2020 after a six-month lockdown on the country due to COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the Deputy Principal College of Natural Sciences, Assoc. Prof. Fredrick Muyodi, undergraduate students will resume studies on 5th October 2020 using online distance learning model as the institution re-opens for business amidst challenges posed by the pandemic.

All final year students and graduate students will physically start reporting at the university on 17th October 2020, and teaching will start on Monday 17th October 2020.

The plan for re-opening follows a presidential directive to open up schools and tertiary institutions including universities for finalists starting 15th October 2020.

In the directive, President Museveni encouraged learning institutions to embrace online/distance learning to enable students in non-candidate classes continue learning despite their stay at home due to COVID-19 pandemic.

University authorities last week noted that the resumption of learning for final year students will not be affected by the major fire incident that saw a section of the institution’s main building reduced to ashes.

On 20th September 2020, the iconic building widely known as the Ivory Tower burst into flames and critical records of the institution spanning decades of years were destroyed in the inferno.

Later, the Vice chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe said the fire at the main building had nothing to do with the learning as the latter takes place in different colleges that were not affected, nor were the staff members to execute the resumption plan.

Before the fire outbreak, Makerere had issued a circular calling the medical students to report to their respective deans to be guided on the resumption of learning. They are expected to report on October 3.
