Three employees of Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) were on Wednesday remanded to prison on charges of extortion after they were nabbed trying to fleece management of a diary processing company unspecified amount of money.
Konde Derrick (UNBS Inspector), Kiganda Stephen (UNBS Driver), a civilian accomplice Solomon Abaho were arrested by the State House Anti-corruption Unit for allegedly threatening to accuse the management of Pearl Dairy Farms of committing a misdemeanor to wit sale of milk which has been rendered unfit to human consumption.
The three were arraigned before Nakawa Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday and charged with attempts at extortion an offence contrary to Section 173 of the Penal Code Act.
The suspects were remanded to Sentema Government Prison until 30th July, 2020 when they will be returned to court for mention of their case.
According to the head of State Anti-corruption Unit, Lt. Col Edith Nakalema, the arrests were executed together with Uganda Police in collaboration with Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS).
Nakalema says there are other suspects in the case still on the run.
