Pastor Yiga granted bail after spending a month in prison, Ordered not to comment on COVID

Pastor Augustine Yiga of Revival Christian Church Kawaala-Lubaga Division in Kampala, has been grated bail.

Mengo court’s Grade One Magistrate Timothy Lumunye released Yiga on a non-cash bond of UGX.2M, after spending a month in prison at Kitalya Government prison for uttering words likely to cause the spread of COVID-19.

Magistrate Lumunye who delivered Yiga’s bail ruling via Video Conferencing at Buganda road court, ordered Pastor Yiga to comply with all the operating guidelines and Laws intended to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Prosecution alleges that Pastor Yiga on 27th/March/2020 while at his Church in Kampala and before reporters of various TV stations, uttered words to mean that there is no coronavirus in Uganda and Africa at large, well knowing that such words are likely to spread coronavirus; a dangerous disease.

However, the Court has restrained Pastor Yiga from making comments inform of opinion on COVID-19 before his followers, on Television or any social platform whether by way of interview or online posting.

His sureties have been asked to sign a non-cash bond of 5mshs and ensure that Pastor Yiga returns to court on 25th/June as investigations into his case continues.

Yiga is facing charges of doing an act likely to spread an infectious disease, an allegation he has since denied.

A video recording of Pastor Yiga however made rounds on social media and various main stream media platforms.
