The Deputy Inspector General of Government (IGG) George Bamugemeire wants local governments and government agencies to set up local complaint handling mechanisms to handle some of the complaints by the citizens.
Bamugemeire says that 50 percent of the complaints the office of the IG receive, are matters concerning favouritism in recruitment, failure to pay pension among others which he says can be handled at local level.
He also said if districts have places where people can lodge complaints, the number of complaints in the IG’s office will reduce.
Bamugemeire said if this is done, the office of the IGG will be able to handle other big cases. He said the IGG’s office currently handles all this as this is their mandate.
Bamugemiere made the remarks as Parliament together with National Schools Debate Council are preparing to hold the 10th National Schools Debate Championship with the aim of sensitizing young people on the effects of corruption.
Bamugemeire also urged Ugandan to participate in the corruption walk slated for Wednesday, saying it is not a political event and anyone can participate.
The Executive Director, National Debate Council Kakaire Dunstan said that the 10th debate championship will be held between 5th to 10th December 2019, at Gayaza High School. The Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga is expected to be the guest of honour at the Grand Finale at Parliament
Kakaire says that this year’s debate is aimed at engaging young people in schools to help understand the extent of corruption, and challenge then to play their part.
