SAD: NRM SG Richard Todwong’s brother dies in a bomb attack inside Somalia

It has since been established that Major Patrick Opiyo Awany is the brother of National Resistance Movement (NRM) secretary general Hon. Richard Todwong.

UPDF confirmed that Major Patrick Opiyo Awany attached to the African Union mission in Somalia under ATMIS was killed on Sunday after a bomb attack which left several other soldiers injured.

According to the Spokesperson for UPDF contingent in Somalia, Capt. Ibrahim Ssekito, Major Opiyo was killed after UPDF super logistics convoy was hit by IED at around 1300hrs between Buulo Nagad and Ceel Waligo. The late Major Opiyo was the convoy commander of the Motorised Infantry Brigade of the UPDF in Somalia.

It has since been established that Major Patrick Opiyo Awany is the brother of National Resistance Movement (NRM) secretary general Hon. Richard Todwong.

According to the army, Major Patrick Opio Awany died on spot, and others who were injured were airlifted to level II Hospital in Mogadishu for treatment. However, the particulars and number of the injured has not been disclosed.

“I celebrate my brother, Maj. Opio Patrick Awany. Your dedication to protecting our country was your code and you approached your duty with unmatched passion. You bravely faced countless battles in the Central African Republic, Eastern DRC Congo and Somalia.” Richard Todwong posted on his X account on Sunday.

“You have been a true representative of the Ugandan Flag Comrade Maj Opio Awany. With honor, we offer a final salute as your honorable soul lay at rest. You have been a true fighter for your continent Africa. Farewell Soldier, farewell.” Deputy UPDF/MoD spokesperson Col. Deo Akiiki posted on X on Monday.

By press time, the army was still waiting for ATMIS clearance and administration matters to have the body back for burial.
