Uganda Prisons Services has disputed the rumour circulating in media indicating that one of their prisoners, Mathew Kanyamunyu is dead.

In a statement, the Commissioner of Prisons/ PRO Frank Mayanja Baine, refutes what he calls “false media stories regarding prisoner KTA /MIN-C /160 /20 Mathew Kanyamunyu” who is in custody at Kitalya Mini Max Prison.

“The general public is informed that the above mentioned person is alive and serving his sentence. These false stories should be ignored with utmost contempt.” Baine’s statement reads in part.

Kampala businessman Mathew Kanyamunyu is at Kitalya Mini Max Prison serving five years for manslaughter, after court found him guilty of unintentionally killing social worker Kenneth Akena in 2016.

Kanyamunyu, his girlfriend Cynthia Munwangari and his elder brother Joseph Kanyamunyu were jointly accused of murdering a child rights activist Kenneth Akena, last November in Lugogo in the outskirts of Kampala.

Four years later and after a series of court sessions, Kanyamunyu went to Akena’s family in Gulu and admitted to having shot Akena describing himself as stupid, foolish and evil. The Observer newspaper reported that Kanyamunyu also admitted that he will make the same confession before the High court in Kampala where he was being prosecuted to allow him to enter a plea bargain.

Kanyamunyu’s murder charge was later reduced to manslaughter by the Director of Public Prosecution after a plea bargaining session held at the High Court criminal division in Kampala.

His then girlfriend Cynthia Munwangari was set free.
