Opposition National Unity Platform president Robert Kyagulanyi has announced nationwide protests calling on his supporters to “reclaim their stolen victory.”
Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine made the announcement on Tuesday at NUP headquarters in Kampala following a hotly-contested presidential election the country witnessed in January this year after which the incumbent Yoweri Museveni was declared winner.
Bobi Wine told a congregation of NUP leaders and supporters that from a tally conducted by his party, he won the hotly-contested election with 54.19 percent of the valid votes cast.
“I call upon you to rise up peacefully and unarmed to demonstrate against the regime that has oppressed us, exploited us and turned us into slaves in our own country. We invite you to march to your respective district offices and seek answers,” Kyagulanyi said.
Bobi Wine recently withdrew a court petition he had filed in the Supreme Court claiming bias and blockage by the state to have him collect the necessary evidence to back up his case. He later announced he was resorting to court of public opinion.
The NUP leader who doubles as the Kyadondo East MP tabled before journalists declaration forms from the January 2021 election results and affidavits that were allegedly rejected by the Supreme Court forcing him to withdraw his petition.
He also used today’s event to call for an independent audit into the January elections.
Moments before the event started, a police chopper was seen hovering over the venue as police deployed heavily in Kampala.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango warned Bobi Wine’s supporters against unlawful demonstrations and to desist from participating in any unlawful activities.
Onyango said police will not hesitate to arrest and charge in courts of law anyone, who will be found participating in these illegal activities,
However, Bobi Wine insists that the demonstrations will be peaceful and legal.
