UCU Medical School set to re-open after 12-month Closure

Uganda Christian University (UCU) in Mukono is set to re-open their medical school following closure by the National Council for Higher Education due to lack of appropriate infrastructure to facilitate medical courses.

The closure of the University’s School of Medicine followed the 3rd Joint Inspection of New and Existing Medical and Dental Schools by the technical Experts from the East African Community between 10th and 14th February 2020,
with an aim of establishing the conformity of Universities to the standards and guidelines governing medical and dental schools in the EAC.

The re-opening was announced on Thursday by the university’s Vice Chancellor Assoc. Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi while receiving a donation from their partners in the United States and a procurement of assorted equipment that will enable a conducive learning environment.

The equipment procured from China comprised of dental chairs, phantom heads among others worth 1.46billion shillings to be supplied to their partner hospitals in training of medical professionals like Mengo Hospital, Namirembe Church of Uganda Hospital, Allan Galpin Hospital and Mukono General Hospital.

Prof. Mushengyezi said the equipment will boost their medical field and bring compliance with their regulators like the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) among others.

Gerald Tumusime, Dean of School of Medicine at UCU urged that distribution of gadgets to their partner hospitals will enhance mainly Dentistry since technology in the modern gadgets will help cope with the rate at which the World is moving.

Dr. James Magara, Head Dentistry noted that UCU’s commitment to deliver quality dentists is timely since the country has inadequate dentists.
