President Museveni has said security agents gunned down the former National Boxing Team captain Zebra Ssenyange.

In opening remarks while delivering end-of-year address to the nation, President Museveni also said he is personally going to investigate the incident after receiving conflicting reports from police investigations.

Ssenyange Zebra (39) also known as “Mando” was gunned down Tuesday night at his home in Bwaise, Kawempe division. The murdered boxer’s wife told residents that the people who killed her husband knocked on his door and upon opening, shot him several times. She also stated that some were in police uniform.

“The security said when they stopped Zebra, he refused to stop. I am very sorry about this. I am going to investigate and inform the country later” Museveni said”

Museveni also said he was initially told that Zebra was training boxers who would be used to attack civilians but later found out that Zebra was doing a great job in Kawempe and an NRM supporter.

He said arrangements were being made to have Ssenyange with other people to meet him (the president) in a the next few days, and he (Ssenyange) had organized for COVID-19 tests before he was killed.

Yesterday, police said investigators had already documented the incident and had “recovered important evidence and ammunition” to help with the investigation. Some reports also pointed out that “thugs” were responsible for Zebra’s death.

“I telephoned his wife and she narrated to me the events. Zebra was meant to meet me, he was an NRM supporter who was doing so much for us” the president said.

President Museveni summed up 2020 as a year of challenges but also stated that Uganda managed. He highlighted challenges including floods, floating islands, locusts and COVID-19 but also noted that in the next few days, he will be meeting the covid-19 task force on the issue of vaccines.

On progress of elections, Museveni said his government is ready to deal with groups of politicians who are perpetrating violence ahead of elections. He also said he has received information that some people are planning to steal elections who he warned not to “miscalculate.”
