Brace for harsh times in next 5 Days; Meteorologists issue a serious warning

Extreme weather; UNMA predicts storms, floods in next five days

For the next five days starting Saturday 26th October 2019, the country is going to experience heavy floods, mudslides and lightning strikes coupled with strong winds; The Uganda National Meteorological Department has stated.

“The heavy rains with lightning and thunder are expected to prevail over most parts of the country within the next five days starting Saturday 26th, October to Wednesday 30th October” reads part of the statement from UNMA.

In a statement released on October 25th 2019, the acting Executive Director Paul Isabirye explained that these occurrences will mostly affect urban areas and low lying areas.

The statement notes that the Southern and Western regions particularly Kigezi highlands, Rwenzori mountain ranges, parts of Central region around Lake Victoria and the Eastern parts of the country especially the Mount Elgon region will likely suffer the most effects.

Isabirye said Tuesday 29th and Wednesday 30th are expected to have more rainfall within the forecast period.

He warned that poor visibility due to heavy rains will pose danger to motorist and advised all road users to take care to minimize accidents during this period.

“Weak bridges are likely to be washed. Road users are advised to be vigilant. Water transport and small aircraft activities as well as fishermen on lakes are also advised to follow UNMA marine forecasts and updates.” he noted.

The public have also been advised against taking shelter under trees during rainfall to minimize exposure to lightning strikes. The rains that started in September are expected to continue until December.
