Delegations from Uganda and Rwanda met in Rwandan capital -Kigali on Monday to discuss implementation of an MOU that was signed in Angola last month to end the diplomatic row between the two countries.
The delegations at meeting form an Ad Hoc commission as provided in the MOU to discuss implementation of a peace pact to resolve tensions existing between the two countries.
According to the MOU that was signed by both Heads of States Yoweri Museveni and Paul Kagame in Angolan capital Luanda, the Ad Hoc commission is supposed to be led by Foreign Affairs Ministers, and comprises of Ministers of Internal Administration from both countries, as well as heads of intelligence agencies.
Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Kuteesa, Internal Affairs Minister Maj. Gen. Jeje Odongo and Attorney General William Byaruhanga are part of the delegation from Uganda, while the Rwandan delegation at the meeting is led by the Minister of state for Foreign Affairs in charge of East African community Olivier Nduhungirehe.
In their opening remarks, both heads of delegations expressed commitment to the provisions in the MOU and the entire process to restore harmony between the two East African states.
“Rwanda is fully committed to the realization of the provisions of the MOU. We will not be found wanting” said Olivier Nduhungirehe.
Hon. Sam Kuteesa said, Uganda is committed to the implementation of the MOU and looks foward to working with Rwanda to resolve the outstanding issuesas soon as possible. He said the MOU enshrines the principle of finding African solutions to African problems.
The opening session was open to members of the press, but the key issues will be discussed in the closed session. Afterwards, the delegations host a joint press conference where resolutions and conclusions will be communicated.
