Dr Atingi-Ego named new Governor Bank of Uganda

Dr Atingi-Ego's appointment settles the 3-year question about absence of a substantive head of the Central bank, following death of Prof Emmanuel Mutebile in January 2022

Monday February 10, 2025: In exercise of the powers vested in the President by Article 161(2) and (3)(a) of the 1995 Constitution, President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Dr. Michael Ating-Ego as the new Governor, and Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba has been appointed as the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda.

Dr Atingi-Ego’s appointment settles the 3-year question about absence of a substantive head of the Central bank, following death of Prof Emmanuel Mutebile in January 2022.

An economist, Atingi-Ego has been in office as Deputy Governor of Bank of Uganda and Acting Governor since 3 August 2020.

On the other hand, Professor Augustus Niwagaba is an International Consultant on Economic Transformation and member of the world Bank consultative group.

According to a statement from State House, the names and CVs of the appointees have been submitted to Parliament for approval.
