KAMPALA UGANDA: The presidential guard confirmed that their forces thwarted an attempt by two people who wanted to forcefully gain access to the presidential residence on Tuesday April 30, 2024.
According to Special Forces command (SFC) spokesperson, Major Dennis Omara, said there was an attempted breach of security on one of the gates of Nakasero State Lodge at around 1410hrs when a car driven by a one Mr. Bwanika Shafik came at a breakneck speed ignoring all security protocols that was severally signalled to them.
In a bid to stop the speeding car, Major Omara said warning shots were fired but to no avail until the guards targeted the car tyres which eventually got flattened and slowed down the car.
“On sensing danger, Mr. Shafik made a quick U turn at the checkpoint and attempted to flee. All the tyres were damaged making him drive on wheels up to the gate of Paltinum Hospital where he went and parked the car.” Major Dennis Omara remarked in a statement issued on Thursday.
Omara says Police swang into action and had Shafik arrested and he is currently detained at CPS Kampala. He was in company of a female at the time of the incidence.
He said investigations into the matter to understand are ongoing to understand the motive of the attack on the highly guarded presidential Palace.
It is also not clear if the president or any of the members of the first family was inside the premises at the time this incident occurred, or not.
“We implore members of the public who would like to access such restricted areas to follow security protocols in place and making use of the available writings on posts and sign posts at check points. Not forgetting adhering to instructions at all time” Major Omara stated.
