The iconic main building at Makerere University which houses key administration offices caught fire last night at around 1:00 am.

Police Fire Brigade arrived shortly but the flames were strong with fire spreading to several other offices causing enormous damage. The cause of the fire is yet to be established.

According to University management, efforts to save the left wing of the Building where the fire started were defeated by the highly powerful and forceful flames. The left wing is custody the Human Resource/staff records of the university spanning the years this university has lived.

The Vice-Chancellor of Makerere University says that all the records on the side the fire started, have all been lost.

Prof Nawangwe Nawangwe however said the Ivory Tower will be restored in the shortest time possible.

“It is a very dark morning for Makerere University. Our iconic Main Administration Building caught fire and the destruction is unbelievable. But we are determined to restore the building to its historic state in the shortest time possible” Prof Nawangwe posted on social media.

Records show that the Main Building was completed in 1941 under the leadership of Mr. George C. Turner, Principal, Makerere College (1939-46).
