Police has released local singer Gerald Kiweewa and comedians; Sabakaki Simon, Serwanja Julius, Mababali Maliseri and Simatongo Gold Kay known for their stage name, Bizonto (the foolish).

The release follows a court order issued today by Buganda Road senior Magistrate Grade One, Her Worship Stella Maris Amabilis Odong.

The orders were addressed to the Inspector General of Police, Martin Okoth Ochola, the Director of CID Grace Akullo and the Commandant of Police Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Kireka.

The magistrate had ordered for the unconditional release of Gerald Kiweewa and the comedian quartet who had been detained at SIU Kireka since 23rd and 24th July, respectively.

Earlier, lawyers of the applicants had attempted to serve the order to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations at Kibuli Police but officers refused to receive the order claiming they were being wrongly served prompting the applicants lawyers to serve the commandant of Kireka police SIU.

According to one of their lawyers Gawaya Tegule, the six were released on condition that they will present themselves to police on Friday. Lawyers however said they cannot advise their clients to do so since the order emphasized unconditional release.

The comedians were picked up from the Radio Simba offices in Bukoto on 24th July, on charges of sectarianism after a video clip of their comics circulated on social media which authorities say contains messages that are sectarian in nature.

On the other hand, local Musician Gerald Kiweewa was arrested on similar charges but his case emanates from the lyrics in his song titled Nantaba whose message is alleged to be inciting violence.

However, police still holds in detention Baba TV journalist Sewakiryanga popularly known as Bassajja Mivule over a similar case. Bassajja Mivule is accused for circulating a video recording which is also said to be sectarian and inciting violence.
