Police in Masaka is investigating a priest attached to Bisanje Catholic Parish over the suspicious death of a suspected robber.
Reverend Fr Richard Mugisha (30 years old) was summoned to police in relation to the death of Ronald Kyeyune, a suspected robber who had allegedly broken into the priest’s house last night.
It is alleged that the suspect was apprehended by the village security team after allegedly accessing the priest’s residence through the roof with an intention to steal a car.
Muhammad Nsubuga, the Greater Masaka Regional Police Spokesperson says that Fr Mugisha called police to alert them about the arrest of a person who had allegedly broken into the windscreen of his motor vehicle. However, the suspect died shortly after arriving at Masaka Central Police Station.
Nsubuga says they have now opened a general inquiry file about the death of the suspect and summoned Fr Mugisha to explain the circumstances under which the incident happened.
Fr Mugisha claims that the suspect was apprehended by the village security team on a routine night patrol and dismisses claims that the suspect was killed by a mob.
He also said the suspect was found naked and had smeared himself with motor vehicle oil which further raises questions over the alleged robbery and the circumstances under which the suspect met his death.
However, Fr Mugisha has been often heard saying he is being trailed by unknown people with intentions to hurt him. He however stated that none of the residents in his house was hurt during the break-in and he too was safe.
