The the National Unity Platform (NUP) has released a tentative program for the burial of the late Kawempe North Member of Parliament, Muhammad Ssegirinya, who passed away on Thursday at midday at Lubaga Hospital.
At 37 years of age, the legislator succumbed to an illness he has been battling with for several years.
Before sharing the burial program, NUP President, Robert Kyagulanyi, expressed his deep sorrow over the hardships Ssegirinya endured throughout his life including street battles with police and a long spell in prison.
“Many of you are familiar with how Ssegirinya was arrested, tortured, and ultimately passed away. On several occasions, he would complain about his life, but people perceived him to be joking,” Kyagulanyi shared, visibly distressed.
Kyagulanyi added that they had been closely following the difficult situation Ssegirinya faced, which ultimately led to his untimely death.
Following his emotional remarks, Kyagulanyi outlined the tentative program for Ssegirinya’s burial.
“Today marks the official mourning of the late Ssegirinya at the National Party Headquarters, located at Makerere Kavule, starting at 4:00 p.m.
According to the burial program, Tomorrow, at 9:00 a.m., his body will be taken to Parliament to receive a gun salute as a Member of Parliament.
At midday, his body will be transported to Mbogo Mosque in Kawempe,” Kyagulanyi explained.
Bobi Wine also mentioned that from Mbogo Mosque, Ssegirinya’s body will be taken to his home in Kasangati, where it will remain overnight. On Saturday, the body will be transferred to Masaka, where he will be buried on Sunday.
“Further guidelines will be issued. We all know that Ssegirinya was a Muslim who honoured his faith. Based on his will, as well as the wishes of his family many of whom are arriving on Saturday from abroad the family has requested that Muslim leaders allow a delay in the burial to accommodate their arrival,” Kyagulanyi emphasised.
Kyagulanyi expressed his deep regret over the loss of Ssegirinya, offering condolences to his supporters, his loyal followers, and the people he represented in Parliament. He also extended his sympathies to the entire leadership community, who mourn the passing of the late MP.
