Independent Akifeza Grace wins Hotly contested Kisoro Woman by-election

Ms Akifeza polled 50,459 votes to beat her nemesis and former MP Rose Kabagyeni of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) by about six thousand votes

Independent candidate Grace Akifeza Ngabirano was declared winner in the hotly-contested Kisoro Woman MP by-election beating five rivals in polls that were conducted on Thursday.

Ms Akifeza polled 50,459 votes to beat her nemesis and former MP Rose Kabagyeni of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) by about six thousand votes.

NRM’s flag bearer Rose Kabagyeni polled 44982 votes, Zubedi Sulutana Salim (NUP) got 903 votes, Ingabire Mable (UPC) polled 362, Musanase Juliet (FDC) 193 votes while Cimpaye Aisha (PPP) got 159 votes.

The Kisoro District Returning Officer, Daniel Nayebare, declared Ms Akifeza duly elected at exactly 1.30am in the race to replace the late Sarah Mateke, who died in September this year.

Ms Akifeza, who refused to concede defeat in the NRM primaries will now represent the people of Kisoro District for remaining period of the 5-year term of Parliament as the citizens prepare for general elections in 2026.
