The suspects in the killing of Joan Kagezi have, finally, been arrested -President Yoweri Museveni said.
According to President Yoweri Museveni, the suspects four in number are: Kibuuka John, Masajjage John, Kissekka Dan and Nasur Abdalla.
Joan Kagezi was assassinated on 30 March 2015 in Kiwaatule, a Kampala suburb, on her way home. At the time of her death, she was the assistant director of public prosecution and head of the International Criminal Division in Uganda’s Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.
Speaking at the 5th Memorial Lecture of Kagezi in April 2022 Museveni said that her killers are in Europe and known to government but he is surprised that seven years down the road, they have not been prosecuted anywhere.
Museveni said he wonders why the attorney general has not been able to extradite them to Uganda to face justice. The seemingly puzzled Museveni tasked the director of public prosecutions (DPP) Jane Frances Abodo after trying to spot the attorney general in vain to explain why the killers who are in a country he didn’t mention, have not been either brought to Uganda or prosecuted from where they are.
In a letter authored today November 5, 2023 President Yoweri Museveni confirmed that the suspects have been finally apprehended. The president who is also the Commander in Chief of the armed forces said the four suspected killers were riding on two motor-cycles.
In another statement, The DPP Jane Frances Abodo has sanctioned charges of terrorism and murder against four key suspects and they will be produced in court this week to be tried for the murder that had remained unresolved since 2015.
