MP sent to Luzira over unpaid 69M loan allegedly spent on elections

Luzira Prison has for the last six days been home for Bunyangabu County MP Kamukama Davis following his committal to prison over unpaid loan obligation he procured two years ago in 2021.

Kamukama was committed to Luzira Prison last Friday on 16th June 2023, by the Chief Magistrate’s Court at Mengo under civil suit number 0452 of 2022 for failure to pay UGX29million shillings he borrowed from DAHU Investments at an interest rate of 10 percent.

At the time of committal, the honorable MP had totally failed to repay the loan amount which had accumulated to UGX69million shillings. It is alleged, the lender asked him to pay at least 10million to avoid imprisonment which he failed to do.

In the warrant of committal, the Chief Magistrate Sharon Nuwaha directed the OC Luzira Prison to receive Hon Kamukama Davis and keep him imprisoned for a period not exceeding Six months or until the money is paid.

Sources at parliament told us the legislator’s relatives have been spotted there in an attempt to retrieve some funds from the honorable gratuity with little success.

Whereas Kamukama procured the loan after elections, sources on the ground indicate the NRM MP spent heavily during elections to win the contest against former Defense Minister Adolf Mwesigye and another NRM leaning candidate Patrick Mulungi.

There was later an attempt by his rival to reverse his victory but the High Court in Fort portal City rejected the application challenging the academic qualifications of Hon. Kamukama.
