Renown Human Rights lawyer and National Unity Platform (NUP) Head of Legal Department Anthony Wameli is dead.
The unfortunate news of Wameli’s passing was announced by National Unity Platform president Robert Kyagulanyi.
“Very sad day! Just learnt of the untimely passing of our dear brother and Head of our Legal Team, comrade Wameli Anthony from the U.S. where he’s been admitted for treatment. Details will be provided in due course. May his soul rest in eternal peace.” Kyagulanyi posted on his Twitter account today.
Anthony Wameli was hospitalized in May 2021 at St. Anthony medical center in Kasangati, Wakiso district due to stomach related complications. Later in October he was flown to the US for specialized cancer treatment.
Wameli was widely known during court proceedings against suspects in Felix Kaweesi’s assassination way back in 2020. Since then he has been handling human rights cases mainly involving opposition supporters.
Before he was taken to hospital, he was last seen at the NUP offices in Kamokya where the party was announcing new leaders for various positions in parliament.
The lawyer also appeared at the General Court Martial where he was representing 36 NUP supporters who were arrested from Kalangala District during the campaigns of their party president, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu.
