Former NUP flagbearer Soroti Mayorship found dead

Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) flagbearer for Soroti City Mayor 2021, Ejoku Elias has been found dead.

According to police, Ejoku’s death followed an attack by unknown people around Kitintale in Nakawa leaving him abandoned at the roadside.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, says the attack happened on Friday around 11PM and police response teams commanded by the OC Kitintale Police Station used a patrol pickup to drop him at Mulago.

However, by the time he was picked from the scene, police says Ejoku was still alive with no visible signs of bodily harm apart from a bloody mouth only to later hear that he died.

Earlier reports had also indicated that Ejoku went missing on Friday night last week when his known contacts went off, only to be found at Mulago Hospital mortuary dead.

Owoyesigyire says the relatives of the deceased told police that Ejoku left Tororo on Friday by bus en-route to Kampala and that he had a job at Kyambogo University. He said investigations including an autopsy are underway to ascertain the actual cause of Ejoku’s death.

During the 2021 general elections, Ejoku contested for Mayor Soroti City on NUP ticket but lost to FDC’s Joshua Edogu.

“My deep sympathies go out to the family of Comrade Elias Ejoku & the @NUP_Ug fraternity. We hope the much touted security cameras will help us to track down his assailants #RIPEjoku” Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga posted on Monday.

Other sources believe that Ejoku was part of NUP leaders who attended a party retreat held last week in Jinja after which he travelled to Kampala.
