20 Warriors have been killed and 4 guns recovered in the last 10 days as UPDF intensifies operations to disarm cattle rustlers suspected to be behind the recent spate of insecurity in Karamoja Sub-region.
During the same period, 49 rounds of live ammunition were recovered, 39 warriors arrested and 776 livestock recovered, according to UPDF.
The new development follows a gruesome incident on 21st March 2022, when 2 UPDF soldiers and 3 Geologists from the Ministry of Energy and Minerals were killed in Moroto District by the Turkana which prompted the UPDF to step up military operations in Karamoja Sub-region.
In a statement issued today, Defense spokesperson Brig. Gen. Felix Kulaigye said the situation in Karamoja is under control following a new spate of murders involving cattle rustlers who entered Uganda in search of pastures.
Kulaigye also notes that ever since joint forces of UPDF and Uganda Police launched operation Usalama Kwa Wote in July 2021, 309 warriors have been put out of action, 184 guns with 2352 rounds of recovered, and 1792 warriors arrested. He also said 4 UPDF soldiers and 5 civillians were killed during the same period.
Since the start of the operation, Gen. Kulayigye said 17,186 livestock have been recovered while 170 others which were reportedly stolen are being tracked by joint forces.
