Police in Wakiso District are investigating a fire outbreak in Temangalo, Wakiso District, which claimed two children.
According to the Deputy police spokesperson Kampala Metropolitan Luke Owoyesigyire, the deceased identified as Eliazari katanaza (4) and Efofo Hamstrong (2) perished in a fire after their mother locked them in a room and went to buy medicines only to return when they were already dead.
The mother, a one Florence Nantume (26 years) and resident of kigoma village, Bukasa parish, Wakiso District, locked them in a one-roomed house with a burning candle before she went to buy medicine since she had a toothache.
According to Owoyesigyire, a postmortem report confirmed that the children died of suffocation since the burns on their bodies were minor.
The parents -Nantume and Balinda Patrick have since recorded statements with police as investigations continue to ascertain the actual cause of the deaths.
This becomes a second incident in only five days following a fire breakout in a room where their mother locked them to go and fetch water from a well.
Police further urged parents to remain vigilant and avoid leaving their children inside the house without no one to attend to them.
