Michael Azira a Ugandan professional footballer and midfielder for Uganda Cranes has also announced his plans to retire from national duty saying he thinks it is time for him to move on.

The 33-year old Michael Azira availed his retirement letter to the FUFA president’s desk on Wednesday. In his letter, he was able to appreciate the Uganda cranes team for giving him an opportunity to represent the county and his family.

“Please accept this letter as a notification that I wish to retire from playing for the national football team effective April 14, 2021. I take this moment to thank all the coaches that I have worked with over the years and I also thank our fans who always supported us at home and on the road,”Azira wrote.

Azira who got his Cranes debut in 2006 joins a growing list of Cranes players who have hung up their boots in a period of just a week including Hassan Wasswa Mawanda the former assistant captain of the team and Captain Denis Onyango.

This all follows statements made by FUFA president Eng. Moses Magogo recently that have triggered an exodus of senior players all opting for early retirement.

Magogo rebuked the players for what he called “shitty football” they played at a continental tournament.

“What type of players are these? What type of football do you play? Before you demand for money what have you put of table? They went and played shitty football and came back. Okay!!bWhat did you do to deserve the money?” Moses Mugogo the FUFA president told players in an audio recording that widely circulated on internet.

These words seem to have greatly changed many passionate Uganda cranes players forcing them to find a
place where their efforts can be valued and appreciated.

Insiders have intimated that a couple of other senior players are also set to throw in the towel.
