Minister Maganda survives shooting as Busia politics turn chaotic

State Minister for East African Affairs Hon Julius Maganda; File

State Minister for East African Affairs Julius Maganda last evening survived being shot by  a UPDF soldier who attempted to block the minister from accessing Omenya landing site in Busia District.

The minister had planned to hold a meeting at the landing site ahead of the NRM party primaries due to start next week.

The soldier only identified as Corporal William Busingye pointed a gun at Hon Maganda but the minister’s bodyguard who pounced at the soldier, directed the gun out of target before several shots went out in the air.

The soldier was later subdued and disarmed according to Maganda. The minister says he has already reported the matter to Busia Police Station.

It is alleged that the incident is related to political rivalry in the area where Maganda who also happens to be the area MP Samia Bugwe South, is set to contest for the seat against two other contenders.

In the scuffle that preceded the shooting incident, it has been reported that several items Maganda was using including a motorcycle and public address system were damaged. An area DPC was also assaulted.

Maganda says he suspects the actions of the errant soldier was influenced by individuals he could not mention.

He said the character and indiscipline of the soldier should be investigated because it doesn’t reflect the image of UPDF and the matter should be thoroughly investigated.
