Presidential aspirant and leader of the People Power Movement in Uganda, Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi has taken over the leadership of a political party -the National Unity Platform (NUP).
We can authoritatively confirm that Kyagulanyi is now a leader of a registered political party.
According to Anthony Wameli, one of the lawyers for People Power Movement, the National Unity Platform is the political wing of the People Power Movement and the process to swap the leadership was concluded a few days ago.
National Unity, Reconciliation and Development Party (NUP) is a political party registered in Uganda and it’s symbol is an umbrella.
Wameli says the move to acquire a political party has been purposely undertaken for upcoming elections and fronting flag-bearers, while the People Power Movement will be handling issues of mobilization of members and necessary logistics.
Wameli said Kyagulanyi was elected the president of the National Unity Party at a delegates conference and he is now a leader of a duly registered political party.
“With the powers entrusted in me as the new leader of the National unity platform, I give you [Ugandans] a go a head to spread your umbrellas as a symbol that we are going to use as we head into the elections” Kyagulanyi posted on his social media account.
People Power has been operating as a political pressure group ever since 2017 when it came into the spotlight as a mass opposition movement.
It has been also nominating candidates to run for different positions in the forthcoming 2021 general elections. Kyagulanyi says he and group shall embark on a process of formalizing the People Power Alliance comprising of different political formations and parties.
He says they welcome other political formations willing to join them going forward.
