President Museveni has picked nomination forms for the positions of NRM chairman and party flag bearer in the 2021 general election.
This was revealed by Dr. Tanga Odoi, the chairman NRM Electoral Commission, at a press conference held at the NRM secretariat in Kampala.
Dr Tanga Odoi also confirmed that Museveni paid the 20 million shillings which was set as nomination fee for anyone interested in the party’s top office.
It is however still unclear who exactly picked the forms on Museveni’s behalf.
Museveni, who has been in power for 35 years, is expected to be widely endorsed for both positions by the NRM party delegates when they meet next month.
According to the NRM party Constitution, the party Chairman is the party flag-bearer for national presidential elections.
This time, Museveni may not face any serious contender in his party after members of the party topmost organ -Central Executive Committee endorsed him as the sole candidate last year.
Other party members who had previously showed interest to challenge him for the position seem to have pulled out interest including Workers MP, Hon. Sam Lyomokyi, who recently apologized met president Museveni and apologized for opposing party positions.
Lyomokyi had previously vowed to contest against Museveni come time for nominations for the party flag bearer.
In 2015, former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi expressed interest in challenging Museveni for the NRM chairmanship but he was frustrated by the party.
