The officer who commanded the military that brutalized Makerere University students during the ongoing protests over tuition increment has been arrested.

UPDF spokesperson, Brig. Richard Karemire confirmed that Capt. Richard Lubeere has been arrested and detained at Makindye military police headquarters and a board of inquiry set up to investigate what exactly happened.

The incident follows grisly events that happened a few days ago as security forces took on students who are protesting against a 15% fees increment. The events attracted condemnation from the public culminating in withdrawal of the army on orders of the President.

In a video footage circulating on social media, the army is seen breaking into students’ halls of residence, flogging unarmed students, and brutalizing journalists. Several victims are nursing wounds inflicted during the attack.

The Parliament, US Embassy, Uganda Human Rights Commission, the national journalists body (UJA), and many other institutions have since condemned the inhumane acts meted on students and journalists by security forces.
