The President was misled on Makerere protests -Student leader

The guild president for Makerere University Julius Katerega has said the president was misled on issues concerning the standoff between students and the administration of the university, resulting in a six-day stalemate as security agents run battles with students leaving several of them injured, and property damaged.

Katerega’s remarks follows a conversation he had with President Museveni on Tuesday, to chat way forward on the impasse that had turned chaotic.

“He had been fed on falsehoods by some elements of the University management” Katerega tweeted immediately after the conversation, but did not specify what the university management told the president.

The students are protesting a new fees policy that enforces a 15 percent increment on tuition which they claim is unfair and should be dropped.

Key officials in government had cited involvement of foreign agents in student protests including opposition politicians.

The President has since directed the University Council to engage the student leadership in a dialogue to end the unrest. The president also ordered for withdrawal of the military from Makerere.

Katerega said he briefed the president on the status quo at Makerere University, and the demands of the students. He said the students’ body will communicate the outcome of the meeting they are set to hold with the administration of the university.
